This is a long shot: We bought four canvasses about 5x7 at a garage sale but have no idea who the artist is. They look maybe 19th century and I wondered if anyone reading might recognize a signature or style or location (Dutch-looking buildings). On the back of one is what looks like a very faded rubber stamp that is difficult to read, but in fluorescent light it might say "Made in Belg . . ." Are these just "tourist pieces"? Or should we get them appraised? We do not subscribe to any of the online pay sites; are there places to make a start for not a lot of money? We're in Ladysmith on Vancouver Island. Thanks for any insight.

I like the term 'Potboiler'. :p

Basically, Something that is done purely to pay the bills rather than any lofty artistic ideal.

I've framed a lot of potboilers in my time.

Thanks to all for your input, which is about what I expected. For those concerned about our financial commitment, we paid a dollar each for the canvasses (Canadian dollars at that) and framed them with a new LJ moulding called Brighton. We'll enjoy them for a while at least but may sell them in the shop, since we are running out of walls at home.
